Gilbert Ward Academy, part of Prosper Learning Trust, is delighted to announce an exciting opportunity for a Deputy Headteacher to join our team. As a purpose-built, state-of-the-art special free school that opened its doors in September 2023, we are dedicated to providing exceptional education for pupils aged 11-16 with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
Located in Blyth, Northumberland, the academy currently serves 56 pupils and is set to expand to a capacity of 80 pupils. This role represents a unique chance to shape the academy’s future, playing a key role in developing and leading outstanding provision for our pupils.
The successful candidate will join a forward-thinking, collaborative community that values innovation, inclusivity, and aspiration. As Deputy Headteacher, you will work closely with the Headteacher to lead on curriculum development, quality of education, and staff leadership while ensuring the academy meets its ambitious goals for pupil achievement and well-being.
Many of the pupils who attend Gilbert Ward Academy will have additional special educational needs, such as, autistic spectrum condition (ASC), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and speech and language communication difficulties. Pupils attending Gilbert Ward Academy may have, at some point, not had success or positive experiences in their education elsewhere.
As a result – along with other factors – pupils will more than likely be working at a lower-than-expected key stage, relative to their age. Most pupils will be working at lower and upper key stage two and will be transitioning from primary schools.
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated leader with a proven track record of success in a similar setting. You will:
· Have substantial experience in leadership within special or alternative provision settings.
· Demonstrate expertise in supporting pupils with SEMH needs or Autism Spectrum Conditions.
· Be a strategic thinker with the ability to inspire and motivate others.
· Share our commitment to providing a nurturing and inclusive learning environment where every pupil can thrive.
If you are ready to take the next step in your career and help shape the future of Gilbert Ward Academy, we would love to hear from you.
